Club Captains' Welcome
Welcome to the University of Sheffield Hockey Club!
We’re the Men’s and Women’s Club Captains for the 2019/20 season, Paul and Maya. The hockey club is the largest sports club at the University of Sheffield, with 4 competitive BUCS Men’s teams and 5 competitive BUCS Women’s teams, along with a Men’s 5th team and Women’s 6th team that have regular friendlies against other universities along with weekend hockey. We have now settled into our high-quality facility at Norton Sports Park (with new additions such as the electric scoreboards) which has given us a great opportunity to push for more success as a club, as we grow year on year.
SUMHC have BUCS teams ranging from Northern 1A down to Yorkshire Tier 5. Last year was a year of mixed success, with all teams staying in their divisions and the 4th team narrowly missing out on promotion. The 3rd team managed to grab a last-minute draw in their varsity game, against opposition from the league above. One of the highlights was the growth of the Men’s 5s whom developed from strength to strength and enjoyed playing regular Saturday hockey. SUWHC had a brilliant season with an even better Varsity result in 2018/19.
Women’s 1XI maintained their position in the league which will be their aim again for the new season, however they dominated Hallam at Varsity which led to University of Sheffield securing the win for Varsity overall in the point needed to tip the scales indefinitely. The Women’s 2XI and 3XI kept a steady position in their respective league tables and will come out again with aims to progress even further and possibly steal the promotion spots. The Women’s 4XI had a tough season, though next year they will be creeping up the league in an attempt to get back on top for a promo. Women’s 5XI won the majority of their games and only narrowly missed out on their promotion. With the integration to Bankers this season, the 6XI will improve at rapidly, ultimately with the goal of getting accepted into a BUCS league next year, therefore becoming a competitive team. Go women! Social hockey succeeds every year with an increasing number of girls coming down for trail sessions, tasters and a bit of fun. If competitive hockey is not your scene then the social sessions are a great opportunity for meeting new people within the club and developing the club as a whole, so come on down and join the hockey family fun!
At SUHC we have a strong commitment to charity and fundraising, and last year we participated in events such as the Sheffield Half Marathon, the Blood Donation Drive and the Spinathon at our Students Union. At the annual Sports Awards, we wiped the floor with our charity and volunteering work and eagerly intend to achieve more and more in the new season. This coming year we will continue to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, as well as extending our partnership with the well-known hockey charity Hockey4Heroes. We are really looking forward to raising as much money as possible for these worthy causes and helping to make a difference to those in need. Starting with a high proportion of the club running the Sheffield TenTenTen, which will kick start our fundraising for the season ahead, and hopefully whip us all back into shape after the summer. We have a strong partnership with Sheffield University Bankers Hockey Club, which gives our members a chance to play Saturday hockey at a range of levels through 7 Men's and 4 Ladies teams. This year we plan on aiding the merger between the Women’s 6th Team and Bankers allowing the club to develop more naturally with the improvement of the development squads. Off the pitch we have weekly joint socials at Vodka Revolution, before heading off down West Street to the legendary ROAR at the Student’s Union. Last year we managed to retain our “roar legends” at our SU by never missing a week; this is something we are definitely looking to repeat, hopefully with your help! Social highlights include Pub Golf, Alcohol Olympics, and our two black tie dinners at Christmas and End of Season! We’re really excited to get started for the 2019/2020 season and are looking forward to getting to know some new faces. Whether you’re a keen hockey player or have never played before, the SUHC is a society to join. If you have any problems we have both male and female committees that are friendly, approachable and willing to help with anything you might need.
See you in the coming season!
Paul and Maya
